Acne is a skin disease that affects people of different age groups but it is most common among teenagers because acne develops due to hormonal changes.  It is found on the neck, chest, face, back and shoulders too as these areas comprise of large number of oil glands. There are basically four contributing factors namely hormones, bacteria, heredity and certain medications which can cause allergy or can be aggravating factor to the skin. Cosmetics which teenage girls usually use can also contribute to acne and they are more likely to have breakouts before or during their menstrual cycles. Contrary to what most of the people think, acne is not caused by eating oily foods or chocolates. Following are the steps which can be followed to prevent acne.

1. Clean your face daily- cleaning face twice daily is a must whether or not you are suffering from acne as it removes impurities, extra oil and dead skin cells from upper layer of the skin. If you are thinking of washing more often than twice will make it any better then you are wrong as it might harm your skin surface by removing essential oils required by the skin, so it is no better. Don’t cause more irritation to the inflamed skin by using deodorant soaps or different face washes rather use dermatologically tested skin care products. Avoid scrubbing your face harshly. Rinse your face well and dry it with clean face towel as dirty towels may cause more acne due to bacteria present on it.

2. Moisturize-  acne products usually contain ingredients that removes oil but when excess oil is removed it dries the skin which becomes another issue. To avoid such situation use a good moisturizer that controls dryness and doesn’t let your skin to peel. Go for “noncomedogenic” on the label of the product as some moisturizers are too oily for the skin and cause more eruptions. There are different moisturizers available for different types of skin.

3. Try an over-the-counter acne product- These kind of acne products need not to be prescribed by dermatologists. These products should have ingredients present like benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid and mainly salicylic acid which controls acne. Depending on how bad your acne is you should decide how much amount and how often you should apply. One should be careful while using these products as it might cause irritation on sensitive skin.

4. Spare makeup- during breakouts one should avoid applying foundation or powder as it might block the pores and causes acne to spread. If you apply makeup make sure that you wash it off before going to sleep. Make sure you go through ingredients before buying it as some of them might cause severe acne.

5. Keep your hair clean- One of the causes of severe acne on back, chest or face is dandruff. Dandruff can occur due to pollution or it might also be heredity, you should curb dandruff by using anti-dandruff shampoos and avoid fragrant shampoos as it might irritate acne. Wash your hair thrice a week daily as oily hair leads to oily skin. If you have long hair, make sure it is pulled away from your face.

6. Don’t touch your face- if you don’t touch your face then half of the work for preventing acne is already done. When you touch your face the bacteria present on your hands might aggravate the acne on the face and if you feel like popping your pimple then “don’t do it” as it spreads the bacteria further on other areas and it leads to either infection or scarring.

7. Avoid Sun- acne prone skin is more sensitive to sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. The ultraviolet rays causes inflammation and darkens the spot leading to vulgaris acne. Always protect your skin from getting tanned by applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at least 20 minutes before being exposed to the sun. Limit spending time in the sun.

8. Exercise daily- exercising daily is not only good for health but also for skin. You must be wondering how that is possible, well, it is! When you exercise you sweat and sweat opens up the pores and clean out the oil. 9. feed your skin- many experts have agreed that a chocolate doesn’t cause pimples. Still you can avoid it and eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Most importantly drink lots and lots of water as flushes out the toxins. Maintain a healthy diet.

10. Relax, take it easy- stress also causes acne so just relax and instead of worrying, look for solutions. Acne can also be cured if you have positive attitude towards it that it would stop one day. It might take months or years but all you have to do is maintain a proper diet, avoid cosmetics and take care of your skin properly.
