What could be better than being involved in a new trend and staying fit at the same time! After dozens of yoga classes began to be introduced in various towns and cities, another form of exercise has begun to take over.

Zumba is a dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990s. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Zumba’s choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mamboand martial arts. Squats and lunges are also included. A quick look at numbers will tell you how zumba has begun to catch on.

  • Approximately 14 million people take weekly Zumba classes in over 140,000 locations across more than 185 countries.
  •  the average number of calories burned was 817 in an hour

It works for all ages:

Although you might think that this kind of heave aerobics would be limited to the young but that’s not true. Like yoga, zumba is beneficial to people of all ages. There are even some Zumba programs designed especially for children called “Zumbatonic,” making them feel more active and healthy. It’s also the perfect exercise for the elderly by helping them stay strong and supple. It all depends on the level o0f zumba class you take and the instructor.

It’s social:

You could go to this type of workout for at least two or three times per week and you’ll get to socialize and make a lot of new friends among your Zumba classmates. Perhaps it is the only form of exercise where the students enjoy as much the instructor!  And when you have fitness buddies, the time goes by even faster!

Body toning:

It involves moving the entire body to the rhythm of the music and your muscles will be engaged to make some specific moves like squats and twists, thus allowing you to tone your entire body without even realizing it.

Stress relief:

Zumba is the perfect workout to take if you want to get rid of all that stress out yourself through. The loud beats and thumps of the music along with high intensity moves enable you to engage all your senses and focus only on the moves. The upbeat moves specific to this workout favor the release of mood-improving endorphins

It does not feel like exercise:

No large and heavy weight has to be lifted, no ab is to be crunched, and no amount of repetitive boring exercises has to be done. If you like to dance, Zumba will feel like dancing.  If you like to work out, well, Zumba will still feel la great workout.  Of course, this is not to say that Zumba does not offer many health benefits, as it absolutely does.  It’s simply that the energy and confidence one gains from Zumba weighs much more heavily on the mind during a workout than the hundreds of calories that are being burned.

Can be done at home:

Were you delighted with the yoga CDs of celebrities like Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu and so on? Zumba is not far behind as it gives you the freedom of working out from home so all you have to  do is put on a CD and dance to the rhythm without spending a lot of money.  Even if you have a Wii or PS3, a DVD or a laptop, or even access to fitness channels, you can do it right in your living room.

Increased metabolism:

An average person burns 600 to 1000 calories per hour doing Zumba. This creates a huge calorie deficit and also increases the metabolism. BMR or basic metabolic rate is the amount of calories burned at rest. A taxing workout like Zumba increases this rate enduringly and facilitates the consumption of large amounts of food. A high metabolic rate is an indicator of a healthy and fit body. If you continue Zumba over a long period, it is certifies that you will burn more calories easily.

Healthy skin:

Zumba gives you that glowing skin. Zumba is arduous and consumes a lot of energy. A large amount of sweat is generated in order to keep the body cool and enable one to continue with the workout. This will mean you will consume a lot of water. Drinking water flushes out the toxins in the body and prevents pimples, acne and many other skin disorders.

Greater Confidence

Zumba routines are basically dancing which can lower inhibitions (in a good way).  It can  improve your posture, which will naturally increase your confidence, and slowly mastering routine after Zumba® routine will increase your confidence while having fun!

As you can see, there are great reasons to try Zumba fitness yourself.  Good music, great teachers and nice company can help you achieve your goal. You can give yourself a challenge, or have fun when you’re working out, or never get bored while working out. Try alternating yoga and zumba and you might get in the best shape of your life.
