For a better tomorrow

The condition of the earth is deteriorating by the day. The situation is highly critical. We need to think about what needs to be done today, right now. We cannot afford to wait for someone else to make the choices and implement the decisions. If we don’t act now there might not be a bright tomorrow. The least we can do is make sure the future generations get to see the world as it is today. We are already experiencing so many natural calamities. Nature is trying to re establish equilibrium against the rising levels of pollution and contamination.

Being blessed with the sixth sense human beings should take responsibility to take care of the earth. Kalpana Chawla’s advice to the youth of the world was “Take good care of our fragile planet.”That is exactly what we are supposed to do as educated and responsible citizens. If we are unable to make the situation better we should at least make sure that we don’t worsen it.

Recycle today for a better tomorrow

The best thing we can do right now is recycle. The idea is simple and highly effective. All you have to do is make sure that your waste items don’t go for a waste. You can sell them to the right people and make wealth out of waste. Nearly 80% of the waste can be recycled. Imagine if your daily waste reduced from 10 bags to 2 bags: this would ease the burden of waste management. As we all know waste management is an arduous task. We can help our government by separating our waste and recycling whatever can be recycled. The first basic thing you have to do is categorize your waste into recyclable and non recyclable items.

School notebooks, newspaper, paper bags, old magazines and other waste paper can be recycled.  Paper is made from wood pulp. This is made from the stems of certain trees. This clearly shows that every notebook we use is made by the destruction of plants. Surveys show that recycling one tonne of newspaper saves one tonne of wood. This clearly shows that our small steps will contribute to saving a large number of trees.

Plastic is a non bio-degradable substance. This has to be recycled so that we make do with the existing plastic and reduce further manufacture of plastic.

Plastic bottles, plastic covers and other plastic items like buckets, mugs can be recycled.

Plastic recycling should be made mandatory because the only way to ultimately dispose plastic is incineration. The burning of plastic causes toxic gases to be released into the air. Hence the use of plastic should be minimized. This can only be achieved by recycling existing plastic and stopping the manufacture of new plastic items.

When you sell your waste paper and plastic you actually get paid for it. Thus you are not only helping save your environment you are also earning some extra cash.

Domestic waste:

Most of the waste generated from our homes is vegetable waste. Vegetable peels constitute around 60 percent of the total domestic waste. Vegetable peels are in fact a great source of nourishment. We may either allow animals to consume these peels or make manure out of it. This manure can be easily made at home.

First dig a large pit. Line it with soil. Place a layer of vegetable peels over it. Place another player of soil. Alternately place layers of soil and vegetable waste. Sprinkle water on it regularly. Within two to three weeks your manure will be ready. Use this for all the plants in your kitchen garden and watch them blossom beautifully.

The joy of giving

Another thing you can do is give away the things you don’t use. You can give away your old clothes, old toys, gadgets or appliances to orphanages or other homes for the people below poverty line.. This way your things will be used by another person. It will be worth the money you spent. Please do donate your things to the less fortunate. Nothing can ever substitute the happiness you gain by giving something to someone who is in need of it.

Thus you can do small things which will help save our planet in a big way. The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. Let us all pledge to reduce, re use and recycle to save our planet. It is high time we start taking action. Otherwise everything will forever remain a plan. If we continue to be the way we are now we will make the movie 2020 a reality. Nature has its own way of getting even with us. Unless we do something to protect Mother Nature she won’t do anything to save us.

“Little drops of water,

Little grains of sand,

Make the mighty ocean

And the pleasant land.”

Let us all take a pledge that we will recycle as much as possible and make the world a better place.
