Books!!!They may look or sound boring to many but in reality they actually are not. They are treasure chests each unique in their own way. They are windows to the world.People of all age groups find books as an escape route to a parallel world. But its realy sad to learn that book lovers are a dying breed today due to the emergence of television, movies, and the Internet.Yes,I do agree that all the 3 mentioned above are a good source of entertainment as well as knowledge but is it acceptable to completely forget them??They were the starters of the expansion of knowledge.I may sound boring now but as you keep reading I am sure you will understand what I am actually trying to tell.
The definition of books as per Oxford is as follows-A written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers. But don’t you think that the definition says very less about them.If I was asked to define books it would go like this-A collection of pages bound together which are written or printed and which contain all the information a person may ever require.I feel those last few words are missing from the real definition and I am sure you all agree with me on that. These collection of pages never cease to satisfy anyone.Everyone will find something that they love and they have never dissapointed anyone.
There are a number of genres of books available. The most popular genres of books are romance,fiction,sci-fi,crime,horror etc with crime being the leading genre. But now the vampires seem to have taken the world by storm with Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ series conquering all the teens with its out of the world romance. This series was also made into a movie franchise which was a superhit. The same was experienced with Suzanne Collins’ ‘The hunger games’.
Just as I said in the above passage about books being made into movies,a few questions pop into my mind.Is it really good for books to be made into movies?Does it lure people to read books?Does it establish an unknown connection between the viewer and the author? If you were to ask me,I would definitely tell a yes for all the quesions asked above.they definitely do lure people into reading books as the viewer becomes curious as to what is gonna happen in the upcoming series. It also does establish a bond between the viewer and the author as the viewer automatically becomes a fan of the author if he/she likes the movie. So it is good to make books into movies if you ask me.
But people seem to have forgotten the benefits of books. Ofcourse with the advancement of technology there are a variety of apps from where e-books can be downloaded. But are they worth the damage they are gonna cause to your eyes?Yes they are easily accessible and handy but are they really worth it?Screen glare and eyestrain are a severe concern for numerous possible customers of e-book technologies. A major concern of reading from an e-book is that it could harm the eyes. The show resolution of computer screens and electronic devices is even less than the print quality produced by a publishing push.Reading from a computer lacks the knowledge and comfort of reading from a book. A paper book can be opened and turned via, while a good electronic text is much more difficult to navigate.
So with the disadvantages weighing more than the advantages i prefer a normal book.I am not the one whos gonna miss the smell of the pages and the crisp sound when I turn them.Book lovers who are reading this,I am sure you know what I mean.I don’t think I can relax with a cup of coffee in my hand reading an e-book.Just like I said in the beginning, books transport us to a different world.I have experienced that while reading crime novels.I usually feel like I am the protagonist solving the crime out there and bringing justice.I felt that the most while reading ‘The ABC murders’ which is a bestseller by the leading crime novelists of all times,Agatha Christie.
Each genre has a leading author but it depends on your own personal tastes. Now lets see the benefits of these knowledge treasures. The following are the main advantages of reading.
Mental Stimulation:Researches have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow down or prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power.Doing puzzles and playing chess help in cognitive stimulation.
Vocabulary Expansion:Books help us improve our vocabulary which in turn gives us the confidence and self-esteem to face the world.
Memory Improvement:As you read books you have to remember all the characters and the plot of the story which in turn helps you improve your memory. Every new memory you create forges new synapses (brain pathways)and strengthens existing ones, which assists in short-term memory recall as well as stabilizing moods.
Knowledge:The phrase ‘Food for thought’ is aptly satisfied by reading books. The famous proverb ‘Wisdom is better than rubies’ can be made true by reading books.
Stress Reduction:Even if the stress you are facing in any situation be it your personal life or office life,a well written book can always transport you to another world and de-stress you.
Improved Focus and Concentration:In today’s world,we tend to get distracted a lot with all the happenings around us.But reading books have shown to improve focus and concentration.Try reading for 15-20 minutes before work (i.e. on your morning commute, if you take public transit), and you’ll be surprised at how much more focused you are once you get to the office.
Better Writing Skills:This is related to your vocabulary.Reading improves your vocabulary which in turn improves your writing skills which is very important in the technical world.
Stronger Analytical Thinking Skills:Let me put this to you in a simple way. While reading any crime or romance novel, have you been able to predict the plot or atleast do you try doing it?If yes, then you are on your way in improving your analytical skills which would definitely help you in today’s scenario.
Tranquility:It is a well known fact that reading books helps you relax your mind but the subject you read can also bring inner peace and tranquility.Reading spiritual texts can lower blood pressure and bring about an immense sense of calm, while reading self-help books has been shown to help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses.
Free Entertainment:Books are a good and harmless way of entertainment. There’s a genre for every person to satisfy his/her own needs and every book satisfies everyone in one way or another.
I am sure that after reading the benefits associated with books, you are already eager to go out and get one for yourself. What are you waiting for?Its time you step away from your computer for a little while, crack open a book, and replenish your soul.
