I am sure you all have experienced the divine feeling a good cup of tea gives.I am also sure that you very well know the beverage and how it is made.But yeah I am gonna be talking about something different.Its a kind of tea but a little different.Curious?I can see you all waiting for me to spill the beans.You are getting annoyed with me doing this.Ok fine,I will tell you.Its bubble tea.How do you find it?Funny?Strange?Well,read on to find out more.

Bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea or boba milk tea, is a Taiwanese tea-based drink invented in tea shops in Taichung, Taiwan, during the 1980s.It is called as bubble tea owning to the fact that it has large,chewy tapioca balls in it.These bubbles are also called as pearls.Most bubble tea recipes contain a tea base mixed with fruit or milk. Ice-blended versions are usually mixed with fruit or syrup, resulting in a slushy consistency.

I am sure you are all amazed.Let me tell you more about it.Bubble teas are of two distinct types which are mentioned below.

But there are many shops that offer a combination of the above flavours giving rise to a new flavour,Fruit milk tea.In milk teas,the milk is mostly added in the form of powder or non-diary creamers,but there are shops that offer fresh milk as well.The source of its sweetness depends on your choice.Sugar,honey,stevia etc can be used.Many American vendors sell milk smoothies which are similar to bubble tea but do not contain any tea ingredients.
This drink is a rage among people as it is easy to make a grab for it and have it on the go.Though it is not as popular as the other beverages,it is slowly gaining its name as a tasty drink that is loved by everyone.If you walk along the streets on Singapore,Malaysia and Thailand you will not find even one bubble tea stall that is empty.You will always find it thronging with people waiting to quench their thirst in a tasty way.
Some of the widely popular fruit flavours are strawberry,mango,passion fruit,green apple,lemon,peach,pineapple,jackfruit,kiwi,coconut,banana,honeydew,watermelon,grape and lychee.Some of the popular non-fruit flavours are lavender,rose,caramel,violet,coffee,mocha,barley,coffee,sesame and a few more.There are many variants in this form of tea.Though tapioca pearls are used in this tea,they can be substituted for green pearls.They have a hint of green tea flavour and are chewier than the tapioca pearls.The chewy texture can also be contributed by additional ingredients such as jelly pieces which again come in a variety of flavours.

As I usually  tell in all my blogs,there is good in everything we eat.But I have also told that too much of anything is not good.So ya,there are health benefits in this drink but consuming too much could lead to problems.Confused?Don’t worry.Let me help you in clearing your doubts.Let me start by telling you about tapioca.It is a starch that is made from the root of the cassava plant.There are many forms of it though the most common form is that of the pearls.You can make both savory and sweet dishes with tapioca or it can be used as a thickening agent.It is extremely low in fat and high in carbohydrates making it good for replenishing the energy lost after doing work.Pregnant women should get 170 grams of carbohydrates every day, while lactating women should consume 210 grams. Tapioca pearls are rarely eaten plain, so the calorie, fat, protein, sugar and fiber content will change depending on how you use the pearls.

Now lets see the devil’s side of this drink.These pearls,milk powder and few other substances have been found to contain chemical additives that are banned.It was even found that DEHP,which is a chemical,is used in these drinks to stabilize them and is said to be carcinogenic.It is also known to cause hormonal imbalances.Though they are not used everywhere,it is good to take precautions before hand.Tapioca pearls,as i said are rich in carbs and consuming too much of carbs can lead to health problems as well.Simple carbohydrates that are found in candies,cookies etc causes a rapid boost in your blood sugar levels which results in fatigue within a short while.Experts suggest that if you consume simple carbs,they should be paired with foods that are rich in protein and fibre as they slow down the digestion of carbs,thereby giving you long lasting energy.
