Face your fears and fight them

Aren’t we all afraid of something or the other? Some of us fear darkness; some fear loud noises, some dogs and a few of us are totally repulsed by the household bugs. These are a few fears which do not affect us much in any way. But what if we fear to move ahead in life? What if we are afraid of taking risks? What if we are too afraid to grow? If we are afraid to venture out of our comfort zones leaving behind a few things we are used to doing, then we are hindering our growth. Also fear causes adrenaline and cortisol to be released into the blood stream.

Fear is nothing but false evidence appearing real. We have developed fears of certain things because of past experiences. We are never born fearing something. Some experiences cause the brain to create an illusion that you fear certain things. But most of our fears are illogical. They have no root and can be easily eliminated. Nelson Mandela says ” Courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it .”

First things first: analyze your fears. Make a list of the things you fear. For the Harry Potter fans visualize what your “boggart” would turn into. When we look into our list of fears we realize that approximately eighty to eighty five percent of them are baseless. The best way to overcome your fears is to face them. Running away from your fears is not an option. You have to face them head on. To face our fears we only need guts and a little common sense. Common sense is not so common. Use your brains always. Reason out and try to find out whether or not your fear is rational. When we identify the nature of our fears we also need to define or formulate a plan to face them and overcome them. Different fears have to be overcome in different ways. Almost always facing our fears helps in overcoming them. Our fear for darkness can be overcome by spending some time in the dark. When we do so our brain realizes that there is no reason to fear the dark. Then our subconscious mind releases that fear. Similarly other minor fears can be overcome easily by facing them.
Your plan for overcoming your fears should have step wise short achievable goals. If you fear air travel you have to make a step by step plan so that you overcome your fear of flying. There may be several smaller reasons which cause you to fear air travel. It may be that you fear heights or closed spaces or you may just fear the idea of defying gravity.
Start small:
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Just start taking steps to overcome your fear. Your first steps will have to be small. For example if you fear heights you have to start by getting used to small heights like maybe a height of 20 feet above the ground . You have to gradually keep increasing the height. So your first steps will be baby steps. Don’t get discouraged by that. You just have to proceed gradually.
Believe you can:
“What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.”Make yourself believe that your fear is silly; because very often it is silly. When you can convince yourself that you actually want to overcome the fear of a silly thing, your work is half done. It will then be very easy for you to then face your fears and fight them.
Regulate your breathing:
When you have to face something you dread your breathing automatically accelerates. The oxygen content sent to your brain is insufficient. Consciously take deep breaths to take in more oxygen. This will help you to relax. It will calm your nerves. It will help in reducing the panic you feel.
The final battle:
The final battle is actually doing what you once feared. Once you have determined the cause of your fear; analyzed it and have decided to overcome it there is only one step left. Face it. If you have taken adequate steps to overcome it you will be ready to face your fear with courage. If not; facing it with a little apprehension is okay too. Just do it. Don’t think too much. Doing the task you once feared will give you a new sense of high. You will have a great feeling: that you have accomplished something absolute and substantial.
So start right away. Make your fear list and start crossing off the items on your list one by one. Ultimately your list will be empty. When you do so you will be glad you took that effort. You will be a true master of your mind and body. You will have no baseless fears. Nothing can stop you from going out and getting what you want. With a little caution and reasoning you can achieve all your goals and realize all your dreams.
