People go crazy when they want to lose weight. And when they’re lazy to exercise they prefer to diet. It is a well-known fact that to stay healthy and to lose weight, one needs to follow a combination of the right diet and exercise. But some nutritionists to make money (according to me) invent diets that barely provide the essential nutrients or may provide just one. This makes the body crave for those nutrients and the metabolism slows down. One barely loses weight and yet looks unhealthy. The body develops a mechanism to fight the low intake of nutrients by using up the body fat – which is exactly what happens when you need to lose weight, except that there is no intake of nutrients at all. Not enough to even let the body perform its daily functions.

Here are a few crazy diets mostly done by celebs that you should avoid – completely!

  • The Tapeworm Diet- Tapeworms are parasites that exist in undercooked, contaminated meat, especially pork. If you contract an infection and it goes untreated, it can be lethal.  This diet involves the intake of tapeworms so that they may eat the food in your stomach.
  • The hCG Diet – A British physician in the 1950’s, suggested that adhering to a 500-calorie-a-day diet and getting daily injections of the hormone human choriogonadotropin (hCG), which is produced in early pregnancy, would help in weight loss. The injections primarily consist of urine from pregnant women. Wonder how may would like that? Moreover, since you’re eating so little, there is no evidence that it will result in weight loss and can be dangerous, causing blood clots, depression, and headaches. You will also feel hungry all day. Is it really worth the pain?
  • The Cigarette Diet – Perhaps one of the craziest diets ever, cigarettes have no calories and was promoted in the 1920’s as helpful in weight loss. But with the increasing awareness of the hazardous effects of cigarettes, this diet has thankfully died. Imagine solely smoking to lose weight!
  • The Vision Diet – The idea is to wear blue-tinted glasses so that everything you plan to eat looks disgusting. However, if you’re hungry you’ll eat everything in front of you. And if it tastes good then even more! Also wearing tinted spectacles everywhere isn’t very practical and may hurt your eyes.
  • The Cotton Ball Diet – Eat a few cotton balls in before the meal and your stomach will be full. In this way, you end up eating less. But cotton balls have no nutrients at all and can be harmful to your digestive tract. It will hinder the process of digestion and will not let the food be absorbed and assimilated in the body.
  • The Twinkie Diet – Twinkies are sponge cakes with a cream filling and have 150 calories each. If you eat nothing but Twinkies you might lose weight but you’ll be depriving your body of essential nutrients. Also, it is like eating bits of chocolate all day, every day, you’ll get bored of it.
  • The Baby Food Diet – This involves substituting baby food for normal meals. Baby food is high in nutrients but low in calories and may actually help in losing weight but it doesn’t contain all the nutrients. Moreover, once you begin normal food, you’ll begin to increase weight again.
  • The Sleeping Beauty Diet – Sleep for 24 hours all the 7 days in a week and you’ll lose weight. You don’t eat anything so you are tired and hungry the whole time. Also, you have to sedate yourself to sleep this much. Elvis Presley loved this diet. But ask yourself if this is truly possible.
  • Airoli Soap: This soap made from aloe vera and a few other herbal ingredients is said to give you beautiful skin and it does so by burning the excess fat beneath the skin. No lotion, liquid or soap can make you lose weight. Accept it.
  • The Chewing Diet – We all know that we must chew food well so that it digests properly. However, this diet takes it a step further.  You have to chew your food incessantly, until the food is ‘purified’, and then spit out what remains. Is it really possible to spit out half of the food in your mouth while the rest goes inside? Gross.
  • Ear Stapling – This involves having surgical staples placed in the inner cartilage of the ear. The staples are believed to stimulate pressure points that control your appetite This is similar to acupuncture. But after some time, your body gets used to it and it becomes ineffective.  Also, it isn’t worth the pain to have your ears stapled just to eat less.

So if you thought bulimia was worse I bet these diets may have caused you to do a series of face – palms. It’s funny what people resort to simply to lose weight. You cannot go on a diet forever. There will come a time when you will have to resume eating normal food and will gain all the weight again. Remember, it’s not only what you eat that counts, but also how much you eat.
