The word “book”, described in a dictionary as – a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers, in reality is not even close to describing its actual worth. Each book is a whole new world in itself, a world you are free to explore the way you like, the way you like to perceive it.

In today’s world where life has become mechanical and people robotic, Ernest Hemingway ‘s words – “ there’s no friend as loyal as a book”  just fit into the picture. Whether you live alone in your apartment, travel to work monotonously every morning, or are just getting tremendously bored, books can come to rescue. There is no limit to the imagination of human mind and with crores of authors and their millions of books, your world is sure to be interesting.

Speaking of the importance of reading books one cannot ignore its effects on children. Books are an extremely important aspect in a child’s life. It helps build her  imagination, learn new things , give an insight to stories and lives which otherwise he or she  would not be able to experience, improves decision making and probing capabilities and naturally strengthens the memory and intellect. These benefits are not just confined to children but to every reader out there.

With the growing competition in every field students across the globe are seen reading and referring number of books and authors. But according to a survey conducted in 2011, astonishingly 57% of the world population does not tend to keep reading books as a hobby. Either it’s for compulsion or it’s not. The problem lies with our view point. With the intention of scoring an A in the class test or proving your intellect to colleagues, we fail to understand the actual essence of gaining knowledge.  The true essence of reading comes from the amount of pleasure you behold while reading your book. There does not necessarily have to be any other reason for reading it. A developing nation needs to make sure its youth are in the company of books of their interest. Like Oscar Wilde said- “It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.” It’s perhaps the best means to just escape the stressful life that people lead.
