It has been a sort of a tradition that since the beginning of time women have written under male pen names. To those who don’t know this it may sound absurd to them. Women have indeed been one of the greatest writers to have ever lived. Not to say that men are any less. But during the 19th century many a new female writers came up. It was during this time that the books became cheap due to the invention of the printing press. And in this era came one of the most celebrated women writers Emily Bronte, sister of Charlotte Bronte and the author of the book Wuthering Heights.

Wuthering Heights is one of those books which fall under the category of Gothic Romance. It talks about passion, wrath and revenge. It is the only book ever written by Emily Bronte. A year after the first publication of the book Emily Bronte passed away. Her book is one of the most celebrated romances of all times. Yes, when one hears the word ‘romance’ there are a million thoughts that come into their minds. The first and the foremost are the ones where the lovers are sharing passionate love notes and kisses and walks around the garden. One thinks about the chase. But this story is a lot different than the regular romances.

The main hero of the book is Heathcliff and his leading lady is Catherine. If you are in a bookshop and look at the back of the book it will talk about Heathcliff and Catherine being in love and then Heathcliff coming back to take revenge. Here, is where one thinks:  ‘Oh! They have told me almost the main part of the story. Why should I read this book?’ Well here is a catch for you, what is written at the back is something you will find out in the first few pages of the book. You will actually find out much more and the little give away is not too much.

The book is basically divided into two parts. Both the parts contain stories of two different generations. But, both the parts have a Cathy and Heathcliff. To begin with one must know what Wuthering Heights really is. Wuthering Heights is the name of the place where Catherine used to live as a child. It is one of the country sides in England. That is where Emily Bronte got her inspiration from and that is where she set the story of her lovely book.

The first part of the book is basically in a flashback where Mr Lockwood, the tenant in Thrushcross Granger, asks his housekeeper Nelly Dean the story about Wuthering Heights. One night when Mr Lockwood was visiting his Landlord, Heathcliff at the Wuthering Heights, he accidently got stuck there due to a storm. Because of that storm he has to stay over and he somehow gets hold of Catherine’s diary and that is how he finds out about Catherine. Wuthering_Heights_1

In short, Catherine’s father had gotten Heathcliff home one day as a kid and had kept him with them and raised him as his own child. But after their father’s death, Hindley became the owner of Wuthering Heights, so Heathcliff was reduced to the status of a servant. Over the years growing up together Catherine and Heathcliff fell in love. Their love is not the regular sort of love which one expresses with words. It is the silent type. One knows that the other person is in love with them. It is that sort of love. Something you can see in the other person’s eyes and feel it and can never be expressed with words.

But as we all know they do not end up getting married. It is written write at the back of the cover in the synopsis. So Catherine finds another man and falls in love with him because it is convenient and she decides to get married to him. So now Heathcliff decides to go away and he does. Years have passed and now Heathcliff returns as a man with money.  He goes away to get rich because of his poverty Catherine refused to marry him. When he returns, he comes back with the intention of bringing everyone down and take revenge for the way all of them have treated him and for the hurt and the pain that Catherine has caused him.

To talk about the second half of the book would give away a lot of things of the first part which is not a very nice thing to do. But here is a little spoiler for you the second half of the book takes the second generation into account and just before the second part starts something really big happens in the end of the first half which will leave one speechless.

All in all, the book is not one of those normal romances that you will come across. It has too much going on at the same time and in case you are one of those readers who tends to skip a few words and lines then here is one thing you should know about this book and that is that it doesn’t really work that way. If you miss out a few lines of the book you will miss out on a lot. So it is one of those books where you have to grasp every word and every sentence which is written in it.

The characters are very well portrayed and you can see them come alive right in front of your eyes. But a personal favorite would be Heathcliff. Heathcliff is tried to portrayed as a stone hearted man who just likes to watch everything fall to the ground. But Emily Bronte has written his character so well that one cannot ever get themselves to hate him. He is that one man who is the way he is because of the way life has treated him and as a reader it is hard not to have a soft spot for him.

Wuthering Heights is not the love story anyone would like to live in, but it is one of those which almost everyone would love to read. It expresses the pain of the broken hearted so well that at a level it becomes hard not to feel their pain and make it your own. The book is no doubt very well written. There is this one that it does not suit the taste of every person. It is one of those stories which will leave a bittersweet taste in your mouth. That taste is not to everyone’s liking. So if you are in a mood for something which will move your heart and make you feel pain, then this is the book for you. Pick it up and read away.
